InSPoC-3 (Future In-Space Transportation)
In cooperation with Telespazio Germany GmbH this study explored how Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) can enable a distributed and intelligent In-Space Transportation (IST) ecosystem. We proposed a five-layer MAS architecture (Intra-Spacecraft, Inter-Spacecraft, Mission, Fleet, and Ecosystem) to allow for scalable and cooperative operations. A key outcome was a quantitative analysis demonstrating that MAS-enabled solutions, such as mid-mission handovers between tugs, can reduce in-space fuel consumption by over 20% and significantly shorten delivery timelines.
SAM-1 Mission (Active Debris Removal)
The SAM-1 project is a pioneering initiative in space debris management that uses a cooperative swarm of small spacecraft – Scouts, Vultures, and Tuggers – to tackle the growing challenge of space debris. The defned mission goal is to demonstrate the flexible, cooperative, and autonomous inspection, mating, capture, and repositioning of uncooperative European debris from a business-interesting orbit to a designated junkyard orbit. This work serves as a critical step toward ESA’s goal of achieving a cyclic space economy by 2050.
